UWOSA is an independent union representing approximately 860 administrative and technical staff at the University of Western Ontario. Our members work in every area of the University in a wide variety of roles. We are Academic Counselling Assistants, Admissions Coordinators, Animal Care Technicians, Booth Attendants, Computer Specialists, Dental Assistants, Drivers, Events Coordinators, Faculty Affairs Assistants, Graduate Coordinators, Horticultural Technicians, Laboratory Supervisors, Library Assistants, OSAP Coordinators, Prospect Researchers, Research Assistants, Residence Clerks, Schedulers, Secretaries, Storeskeepers, Technical Supervisors and Undergraduate Assistants (and so much more).

Call for Members: Strike Preparedness Committee (SPC)

The Strike Preparedness Committee (SPC) is responsible for overall coordination of strike planning and implementation, including the set-up of strike headquarters, and all materials for the picket lines such as signs, cell phones, and refreshments. The SPC develops a communications strategy and coordinates communication including handouts for the picket-line, strike newsletters and bulletins, including the website and social media pages. The SPC identifies the locations of the picket lines, organizes the schedules for pickets, arranges strike captain and picketer training, monitors the picket lines and provides daily reports to the Chair of the Strike Preparedness Committee.

Vacancy: Steward Council: Area Stewards
The purpose of a UWOSA Steward is to represent the members in the area that they serve. This can be the area at the University where the Steward works or anywhere on campus if the position is filled in the member’s direct area.

General responsibilities are to attend bi-monthly Steward Council meetings (see Article 7: Union Representation), bring concerns of members to the attention of Executive Officers, to explain articles within the collective agreement to members, be available, where appropriate to accompany any member who requests union representation (except Article 11, 13 and Article 24 meetings), and to establish a higher profile for UWOSA in departments and units on all campuses of Western University.

We are asking members to consider joining the Stewards Council to represent the following areas for the second year of a two-year electoral term (May 2017 to April 30, 2018):
* ACVS/Robarts
* Medicine – Basic Clinical
* Medicine – Basic Sciences
* VP External, VP Research
* Libraries (alternate)
* Science (alternate)

Constitution and Bylaws:
The Constitution & Bylaws Committee reviews, and recommends changes to the Constitution and Bylaws. It accepts suggestions from Stewards Council, Association Members, and the Executive Committee for consideration. Recommendations are submitted in writing to Stewards Council and if approved, are put forth to the membership for discussion and vote.

Finance:
The Finance Committee develops short-term and long-term budgetary plans for the union, reviews monthly profit and loss statements, and recommends operating funds to be approved by Executive Committee, Stewards Council and the Membership at the end of each fiscal year (May 1 - April 30). The Finance Committee also meets with the union's financial advisors on investment portfolios and establishes procedures for payment distribution in the event of a strike.

Membership, Newsletter, and Social:
The Membership Newsletter & Social Committee is responsible for planning annual events, assist with training and development events (i.e., retreat), assist with community support projects (i.e., hamper program for the Salvation Army) and volunteer opportunities (Ronald McDonald House). In additions the MNS Committee writes articles for the Association's newsletter and finds promotions and discounts from London and surrounding venues to offer to our members (i.e., Columbia Store and Union Savings). March "Dinner at our House" Ronald McDonald House Highlights

Sloppy Joe's and Caesar Salad was the menu for the March 2, 2017 UWOSA hosted "Dinner at Our House" event on March 2, 2017. The group - - Lisa Lyons, Mari Long, Norma Jean Trask, Ann Baker, Mary Van de Ven, Natalie Samuel, and Stephanie Desarmeau - - were treated to a tour of the House prior to making, serving, and eating supper with the families currently staying at the House.

"It is such an enjoyable experience to meet fellow UWOSA members and share in this wonderful opportunity to give back to our community," said Stephanie Desarmeau, co-organizer of the event.

February Ronald McDonald House Highlights

February 2, 2017 was the first UWOSA "Dinner at our House" volunteer opportunity at the Ronald McDonald House London (RMHL). We can all be proud of our fellow UWOSA members - - Julie Chapman, Mauricio Marin, Steve Hewlette, Margaret Richmond, Natalie Samuel, Jennifer Heidenheim, and Stephanie Desarmeau - - for providing great food and converasation for the families staying at the House.

"This was such a great opportunity to get to know members from across our union. We had an amazing night, cooking, laughing and eating and all for a great cause," said co-organizer, Natalie Samuel.

UWOSA to Support the London Food Bank in December

Dear Fellow UWOSA Member,

Our Membership, Newsletter, and Social Committee has requested our membership support the London Area Food Bank for our 2016 holiday charity.

The London Food Bank has been providing relief to local families in need for nearly 30 years. Its mission is to help a caring community share its food resources; and it’s two-part mandate is to (1) act as a front-line agency assisting those struggling to make ends meet, and (2) act as a food warehouse and work with other agencies that assist people in need.

We will be collecting donations (non-perishable items and/or monetary donations) from December 1-21, 2016.

Please bring your non-perishable item(s) or monetary donation to to your Area Steward.

The London Food Bank has had an increase in need this year and greatly appreciates donations of the following specific food items:

• Canned fruit, vegetables, and legumes
• Canned tuna or salmon
• Canned meats
• Peanut butter
• Dried vegetables and legumes
• No salt added canned tomatoes
• Baby food & formula
• Rice & Pasta
• Special diet foods (gluten/lactose-free, etc.)

A Message from the UWOSA President

Dear Fellow UWOSA Members,

The UWOSA Executive and our Pay Equity/Job Evaluation Consultant, Daina Green, continue to work with the Employer and their consultant to complete the process of developing and implementing point bands so that all our new job evaluation forms (PDQs) can be properly evaluated with the new system. Unfortunately, our consultant has reported that the process is stalled and minimal progress has been made since the summer.

While it was always UWOSA’s understanding that the new job evaluation system would be Pay Equity compliant and used by the Employer to achieve Pay Equity for our bargaining unit, the Employer continues to disagree with us. Their stance is that their original Pay Equity Plan from 1990 is still valid and that they have been maintaining pay equity for us all along.

While we had hoped to have seen some significant progress by late October with the job evaluation process, this has not been the case and both our UWOSA Executive and our consultant are frustrated with the continual delays on the part of the Employer. We have heard from many of you regarding your job evaluations and the continued delays and we know that you are just as frustrated.

Upon exploring all possibilities, our UWOSA Executive instructed our Association’s Pay Equity lawyer to file a complaint on November 4th with the Pay Equity Commission.

We will continue to ask our consultant to work with the Employer to complete the point bands so that all of our job evaluations can be completed.
