FAQs - Elections

Q: How does the election process work?
The rules regarding nominations, campaigning and elections are all outlined in UWOSA’s Constitution and Bylaws. For a copy, visit the UWOSA website at: http://uwosa.ca/sites/default/files/UWOSA%20Current%20CBL.pdf
or call ext 85089.

Q: What positions are up for Election?
Nominations are being accepted for ALL UWOSA elected positions. There are seven Executive positions (President, Vice President, Chief Steward, Membership Services Officer, Health and Safety Officer, Secretary, and Treasurer) and 23 Area Steward positions.

Q: What position can I run for?
UWOSA members can run for any Executive position, or for the Steward position that represents the area in which they work.

Q: How long do the positions last?
All offices have terms that end on April 30, 2014.

Q: What area am I in?
Each building that members work in belongs to a UWOSA area from A to T. To find your area, visit http://uwosa.ca/sites/default/files/UWOSA%20Areas%20by%20Building.pdf or call the UWOSA office at ext 85089.

Q: What is Full Release Time?
The President, Vice President and Chief Steward are on full release time. These individuals continue to be Western employees, and their pay and working conditions do not change. However, instead of their regular duties, they move to the UWOSA office and work for UWOSA for the duration of their terms.

Q: What does the President do? What about the Vice President or Chief Steward?
The duties of each office are outlined in UWOSA’s Constitution and Bylaws. For a copy, visit the UWOSA website at: http://uwosa.ca/sites/default/files/UWOSA%20Current%20CBL.pdf
or call ext 85089.

Q: What is the difference -- in terms of time commitment -- between being a member of the Executive and being a Steward?
The Executive Committee meets every Tuesday from 12:00 to 1:30. Stewards Council meetings are held on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 12:00 to 1:30 pm. Stewards attend Council meetings but are not required to attend Executive meetings. Executive members must attend both.
Executive members and Stewards are entitled to add one hour to their lunch period to attend these meetings. This time must be made up, and members can use their lunch periods to make up this time.

Q: I have more questions. Who do I call?
There are individuals who must remain neutral during the nomination and election process. Please feel free to contact either Jennifer Brace, chair of the Elections Committee at jjbrace@uwo.ca or Mary Hay, UWOSA Business Manager at mary.hay@uwosa.ca.
